Intermediate Adjunction with A-Movement
نویسنده
چکیده
It’s widely assumed—often tacitly—that A-movement doesn’t move through intermediate positions where it doesn’t seem to check features (e.g. Baltin 2001). Chomsky (2001), however, proposes that all movement from inside the complement of v to a position above vP must pass through an intermediate position in the edge of vP. Within Chomsky’s proposal, this follows from the assumption that vP is a Phase. Fox (1999) and Nissenbaum (2000) argue on independent grounds that A-bar movement across vP must leave an intermediate trace in vP. In this squib, I give one argument in favor of intermediate adjunction to vP in the case of A-movement across vP. A well-studied case of A-movement is raising in English. With Chomsky (1995) and others, I assume that raising is movement of the subject from a position in the infinitival complement to the matrix Spec(TP) position to satisfy the EPP. This is illustrated in (1).

Disentangling Notions of Specifier Impenetrability: Late Adjunction, Islands, and Expressive Power
In this paper we investigate the weak generative capacity of minimalist grammars with late adjunction. We show that by viewing the Specifier Island Condition as the union of three separate constraints, we obtain a more nuanced perspective on previous results on constraint interaction in minimalist grammars, as well as the beginning of a map of the interaction between late adjunction and movemen...

متن کاملADJUNCTION OF n-EQUIVALENCES AND TRIAD CONNECTIVITY
We prove a new adjunction theorem for n-equivalences. This theorem enables us to produce a simple geometric version of proof of the triad connectivity theorem of Blakers and Massey. An important intermediate step is a study of the collapsing map S∨X → S,
متن کاملCross-serial dependencies in Tagalog
There are two salient linguistic uses of adjunction: for analyzing long-distance wh-movement (and related movement types) in many languages and for analyzing cross-serial dependencies (CSD) in Dutch and Swiss German. While the need for and the adequacy of adjunction to model wh-type movement have been questioned (Rambow and Vijay-Sbanker, 1998; Rambow et al., 2001), CSD seems ideally suited for...
متن کاملMerge, Conflation, and Head Movement: the First Sister Principle Revisited
Head-movement is something of a conundrum in modern syntactic theory. At the beginning of the 1990s, it fit beautifully into the system of assumptions that were gradually coalescing into the Minimalist Program. The Head Movement Constraint of Travis 1984 was unified with other constraints on movement as an instance of Rizzi’s 1990:11 Relativized Minimality, the first overarching vision of how e...
